We’re still just in the very start of hurricane season, but if 2020 has taught us anything so far, it’s that you can never be too prepared!
If this isn’t your first hurricane season, then you are all too familiar with the craziness that unfolds at the stores and gas stations. You will have enough to do with preparations at your home, you shouldn’t have to worry about collecting supplies too – like toilet paper!
After a storm, you may need to survive on your own for several days without the luxuries we are accustomed to like running water and electricity. Being prepared means having your own food, water and other supplies to last for at least 72 hours. You also need to consider what unique needs your family may have such as pets, seniors and specific medications.
Especially since some supplies are already difficult to find, it’s a good idea to start stocking your hurricane preparedness kit now! You can begin with the smaller inexpensive items that aren’t so easy to find once the storm path is announced.
Here is a list of a few essentials you can include:
- Water – at least one gallon of water per person per day
- Food – minimum of a three-day supply of non-perishable food
- Extra batteries
- Flashlights
- First aid kit
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio
- Moist hygiene towelettes
- Garbage bags and plastic ties
- Duct tape and tools to turn off utilities and make minor repairs
Planning and preparing can make a big difference in safety and resiliency in the wake of a hurricane. The ability to quickly recover following a hurricane requires a focus on preparedness, advance planning, and knowing what to do in the event of a hurricane.
