3 Things To Check Before Using Your Heat This Winter

February 6, 2020

If you’re a native Floridian or at least have spent enough time here in the heat, you’re probably noticing the recent cooler weather more than others. And as the temperatures dip below 70 degrees, you may switch on the heat without a second thought!

However, after your system has sat unused for most of the year, it’s important to check a few things before turning it on for the first time. Taking a few minutes to read this checklist could help you avoid system malfunctions and costly breakdowns.

Here are 3 things to check before turning your heat on this winter:

  1. Air Filter – It’s best to use a new and clean air filter when turning on the heat. It’s also important to be regularly changing your filter for proper function and clean air flow into your home.
  2. Vents – Inspect the supply and return vents in each room of your home. Closed registers may be making your unit less efficient. Clean any dust or debris that may be stuck to the grates or obstructing the air flow.
  3. Hold Your Nose – When you first turn on the unit, you may notice a funny smell from the registers. They are burning the dust that has settled on the heating components when they were not in use. This smell should be temporary, but if it persists, double check the filters and ducts or call a professional.

Remember – there’s no shame in turning on your heat during the winter months in Florida! We may not have snow flurries, but it still gets pretty cold some night! And it’s very important to know how to best maintain your appliances safely and efficiently!

Stay warm, friends!
